Recently, Charlie Walker from the Chippewa Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) delivered a compelling presentation at the Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Association (WECA) Managers Meeting in Stanley, WI at the RESCO facility. WECA has a rich history rooted in the Great Depression of the 1930s, marked by significant achievements and leadership in rural electrification. Among its notable milestones is the creation of the nation’s first statewide association for Rural Electric Cooperatives. Over the past 80 years, Wisconsin’s rural electric cooperatives have evolved into vital community assets, providing more than just reliable electricity. Their ongoing success is supported by organizations like CEDC, which promote business growth in rural Wisconsin.

In his presentation, Charlie emphasized the critical role of economic development in fostering growth and sustainability in rural areas. Unlike urban centers, rural communities face unique challenges, including limited resources, a smaller talent pool, infrastructure needs, and financial constraints. CEDC’s initiatives in the Chippewa Valley are essential for job creation, attracting investment, and improving the quality of life for rural residents.

Charlie detailed how CEDC supports economic development through a range of programs, such as attraction, entrepreneur and startup development, advocacy, and business expansion and retention (BEAR). By working closely with local businesses, government entities, and economic development stakeholders, CEDC provides vital resources and strategic guidance, helping rural communities prepare for growth. Through efforts like workforce development, business expansion assistance, and infrastructure improvements, CEDC plays a key role in driving positive economic outcomes.

A significant part of Charlie’s presentation was dedicated to how CEDC demonstrates its value to investors. He outlined various initiatives and programs that contribute to the economic vitality of the Chippewa Valley. These efforts not only benefit local communities but also offer a solid return on investment for those supporting CEDC’s mission. By fostering a business-friendly environment and promoting sustainable growth, CEDC significantly impacts the region’s economic stability and attractiveness to new investors.

Charlie’s presentation highlighted the crucial role that organizations like CEDC play in advancing rural economic development. By focusing on investor value and sustainable growth, CEDC continues to make a meaningful impact on the economic landscape of the Chippewa Valley and beyond. Barron Electric Cooperative, Chippewa Valley Electric Cooperative, Clark Electric Cooperative, Dunn Energy Cooperative, and Eau Claire Energy Cooperative, have all participated in CEDC events and continue to support the organization and its activities. Without their help we can not do what we do here at CEDC.
