Wisconsin—and the Chippewa Valley in particular—lags behind some other states and regions in new business formation and job creation per startup. The rate of new business launches has also declined in recent years. Recognizing this challenge, the Chippewa Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) has been working to change the trend. We’re focusing on increasing support density, backing founders, and building a stronger ecosystem for growth—especially for second-stage companies.

You might be surprised to learn just how many second-stage companies operate right here in western Wisconsin. These are typically privately owned, growth-oriented firms with annual revenues between $1 million and $50 million and at least 10 employees. They’ve moved beyond the early hurdles of starting up and are now focused on scaling their operations, expanding into new markets, and creating lasting value in their industries.

BEAR builds on our existing lineup of programs, which include grant funding through HATCH, technical assistance, training, and mentorship. All are designed to foster collaboration, accelerate growth, and give  companies the tools they need to succeed. One way we do this is by creating spaces where entrepreneurs can connect, share knowledge, and learn from one another.

A great example was the recent BEAR Pitch Competition, held at the East Bay Event Center in Holcombe, Wisconsin—a room filled with business leaders, investors, and community members eager to support the region’s entrepreneurial spirit. The event kicked off with an engaging investor–founder “speed dating” session on the patio, where entrepreneurs sat down with seasoned mentors to gain valuable insights from those who know the ropes. The goal was simple: share knowledge that could help entrepreneurs take their next big step toward success.

After speed dating wrapped up, over a dozen founders mingled with guests, enjoying hors d’oeuvres, sipping CEDC’s signature “BEAR-Y” cocktails or mocktails, and building new connections while anticipation built for the main event—the “Shark Tank”-style pitch showcase.

When the pitching began, the room fell silent, every eye fixed on the stage. Founders shared their growth and expansion plans with confidence and passion. Each pitch was met with enthusiastic applause and thoughtful, challenging questions from an outstanding panel of judges.

And then—the winners were announced. Grand Prize Winner: Mel Ohlinger of OhmCo Carwash Marketing — revolutionizing the way car wash businesses shine, with guaranteed pitch opportunities to major investor groups. Audience Choice Award: Brittany & Andrew Bakos of A to B Mobile Repair — delivering mechanic services straight to your driveway, earning nearly half of the audience vote.

The BEAR ’25 Pitch Competition was more than just an event—it showcased the entrepreneurial spirit driving economic growth in the Chippewa Valley. By bringing innovators, mentors, and investors together, we’re fostering an environment where bold ideas can take root, grow, and thrive. Competitions like this highlight the creativity, resilience, and vision thriving in our region. When entrepreneurs gain access to mentors, resources, and community support, we’re not only helping individual businesses succeed—we’re strengthening the economy of the entire Chippewa Valley.
