Are you looking for the perfect location to kick-start your biobased project? Look no further than BDO Zones! These designated areas are transforming the landscape for bio-based industries, offering a multitude of benefits that make them prime locations for development. Let’s dive into the key advantages of BDO Zones and why they stand out! Just recently, Ecostrat Inc. and the BDO Zone Initiative, in collaboration with TheDigest, hosted the BDO ZoneCONNECT webinar, highlighting two investment grade BDO Zone communities in North America: Chippewa County, Wisconsin, rated ‘A’ for Corn Stover Flagstaff County, Alberta, rated ‘A’ for Wheat Straw.

The webinar was moderated by Jim Lane, Editor of TheDigest, and featured key insights from Aryn Garswood, Head of the BDO Zone Initiative. Participants included Jenalee Waring, Economic Development Officer at Flagstaff County, Alberta; and key executives from Chippewa Economic Development Corporation: Charlie Walker, President/CEO; and Casey Hedrington, Economic Development Specialist. The webinar underscored the regions’ abundant biomass resources, robust infrastructure, shovel-ready sites and attractive local incentives, positioning these BDO Zones as prime locations for biobased projects seeking a reliable supply of agricultural biomass feedstock.

Abundant Biomass Resources & Investment-Grade Ratings

One of the most compelling reasons to consider a BDO Zone is the rich availability of biomass resources. For instance, Flagstaff County in Alberta boasts plentiful wheat straw, while Chippewa County in Wisconsin offers a robust supply of corn stover. This abundance ensures a reliable feedstock supply for various biobased projects, from bioenergy to bioproducts. BDO Zones are rated based on their biomass resource potential and infrastructure, providing a clear indication of their readiness for investment. For example, Flagstaff County and Chippewa County both received ‘A’ ratings, signifying their suitability for sustainable development. These ratings give investors confidence and clarity when considering potential sites. Marcin Lewandowski, Senior Director, Operations & Risk, Ecostrat noted “The low-risk quantity of corn stover available in Chippewa County is 380,000 bdt/year. This estimate accounts for any demand in existing markets. There is no big buyer of corn stover in the region so no major competition, however, 20% of the silage goes to the animal market. We account for the sustainable removal rate of about 40% and the farmer participation rate of 50%. This is how we determine our rated quantity that’s available in the region and this only accounts for about 16% of total production of corn stover.”

Robust Infrastructure & Shovel-Ready Sites

BDO Zones are equipped with strong infrastructure that supports the establishment and growth of biobased projects. From transportation networks to energy facilities, these regions are well-prepared to handle the demands of industrial development. This ensures smooth operations and reduces logistical challenges for companies setting up shop in these areas. Time is of the essence when it comes to project development, and BDO Zones recognize this urgency. Many zones like the one in Chippewa County offer shovel-ready sites, meaning the land is prepped and primed for immediate construction. This accelerates the timeline for project initiation, allowing companies to get up and running faster. Casey Hedrington, Economic Development Specialist of the Chippewa Economic Development Corporation highlighted that “Chippewa County is in the middle of two tier one markets, we’re between Chicago and Minneapolis so we have great market access. and he New Auburn Industrial Site has rail spurs on site, it’s got three phase power, plenty of incentives and all the water, sewer and electric access you need.”

Networking and Collaboration Opportunities

BDO Zones are part of a larger network that fosters collaboration and connectivity among stakeholders. Initiatives like the BDO ZoneCONNECT webinar series bring together investors, project developers, financiers, and community leaders to share insights and explore opportunities. This collaborative environment enhances innovation and accelerates the growth of the biobased sector. BDO ZoneCONNECT, a joint initiative with The Daily Digest, aims to facilitate connections and stimulate development interest within BDO Zone communities. It serves as a catalyst for networking, sharing new BDO Zone ratings, and attracting a diverse global audience of stakeholders, including investors, bio-based project developers, financiers, and community leaders.
