CEDC was fired up—literally and figuratively—as our very own barbecue team, C2 BBQ, proudly competed in the inaugural Northern Wisconsin State Fair BBQ Cook-off. Thousands of BBQ cook-offs now take place annually across the U.S. and internationally, attracting pitmasters, foodies, and tourists. Events like the American Royal in Kansas City and the Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Tennessee are considered BBQ’s Super Bowls-and there is no doubt the Northern Wisconsin State Fair’s cook off is headed in that direction. This sizzling new event brought together pitmasters from across the region for a day filled with smoky flavors, live music, food trucks, and festive camaraderie. But for CEDC’s team—Ken Pearson, Paul Olson, Casey Hedrington, and Charlie Walker—it was about more than just chicken and ribs. It was a chance to showcase the heart of our organization: teamwork, creativity, and making meaningful connections.
Before sunrise, Charlie and Casey were already tending the smokers. Paul crafted his signature BBQ sauce, while Ken expertly seasoned meats generously provided by CEDC supporter Crescent Meats of Cadott. Between stoking the fire and perfecting their flavors, the team welcomed curious attendees, shared stories about CEDC’s work, and built new relationships—one bite at a time.
From Ken’s smoked chicken and Casey’s duck and spare ribs, to Paul’s baby backs and Charlie’s pork loin, the aromas alone drew a crowd. And as families laughed and cheered, C2 BBQ stood proud—not just as competitors, but as ambassadors of CEDC’s community spirit.
Just like economic development, great barbecue demands collaboration, patience, and attention to both the big picture and the smallest details. This event reminded us that Chippewa County thrives when people come together—whether through business innovation or shared traditions.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, cheered us on, and celebrated with C2 BBQ. We’re proud to be part of a community where connection is always on the menu.
