The Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire has officially moved onto campus, making it easier for Blugold students and faculty to support entrepreneurs and drive small business growth throughout the Chippewa Valley.

On June 5, the SBDC transitioned from its former location at 221 W. Madison St. to Schneider Hall, home of UWEC’s College of Business. To mark the occasion, the SBDC joined the College of Business, Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, and Chippewa Falls Area Chamber of Commerce in hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) was proud to attend alongside community and business leaders to show support for this important partner.

“We’re often described as one of UW-Eau Claire’s best-kept secrets when it comes to supporting small businesses,” said Harlie Juedes, Director of the SBDC. “With our move back to campus, we’re excited to strengthen connections within the university and open more pathways for collaboration with the broader business community.”

The SBDC plays a vital role in the economic health of west-central Wisconsin, offering no-cost, confidential business counseling and education in Eau Claire, Chippewa, Barron, Clark, Dunn, Pepin, Rusk, and Taylor counties. In the past five years, the center has served more than 2,350 businesses, helping secure funding, make data-driven decisions, navigate regulations, improve operations, and plan for sustainable growth.

“Through aggressive outreach and a visible presence in the community, the SBDC provides valuable, direct assistance to small businesses when and where they need it most,” said Missy Hughes, WEDC Secretary and CEO. “WEDC is proud to partner with the SBDC to help our businesses and communities thrive.”

“Both CEDCs and SBDCs aim to strengthen our local economy by supporting small businesses, job creation, and entrepreneurship. The move to UWEC’s College of Business furthers the SBDC’s mission by leveraging student and faculty expertise and participation in the entrepreneurial ecosystem,” expressed Julie Thoney, CEDC Board Member.

The SBDC is also a valued collaborative partner of the CEDC, actively contributing to our programs such as HATCH, the BEAR initiative, and assisting clients who utilize the Chippewa County Revolving Loan Fund. Together, we are committed to building a stronger, more resilient business community in the Chippewa Valley.

Congratulations to Harlie and the entire SBDC team! We look forward to continuing our work together to make Chippewa County the best place to grow a business—and a family.
