It is with deep sadness that CEDC communicates the passing of Board Member Albert Edward Holand III, known to many as Ed, who died suddenly of a heart attack on July 28th, 2024. Ed was a visionary entrepreneur who owned CN Manufacturing in Boyd, a dedicated CEDC board member, and a pillar of our community whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

Ed’s entrepreneurial spirit ignited at the young age of 17 when he started his first business, a driveway sealing company, with his best friend Kevin Barrick. This early venture was just the beginning of a remarkable career that would span decades and touch numerous industries.

After spending time in Hawaii rebuilding houses as a contractor in the wake of a devastating hurricane, Ed returned to the mainland with renewed purpose. In October 1994, he founded Barn Again Furniture, a company that breathed new life into run-down barns by transforming their wood into exquisite furniture pieces. Each creation told a story, featuring a picture and summary of its source barn, preserving a piece of history in every item.

Building on this success, Ed launched Urban Renewal in 1996, further expanding his footprint in the furniture industry. His innovative approach to business continued in 2005 when he joined C&N Manufacturing. Under his leadership, the company experienced rapid growth, eventually leading to Ed’s acquisition of the business, which continues to thrive today.

Ed’s impact extended far beyond his business ventures. He was an active and passionate board member of the Chippewa Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), where he tirelessly advocated for local economic growth. His enthusiasm for the annual HATCH event, which fostered entrepreneurship in the community, was infectious.

As a mentor and role model, Ed’s influence on the business community was profound. He was known for his unwavering support of others, always ready to offer guidance, encouragement, and resources to help fellow entrepreneurs succeed. His big presence and cheerleading spirit made him a beloved figure in the community.

Ed Holand’s legacy is one of innovation, perseverance, and community support. His journey from a teenage entrepreneur to a successful business leader and community pillar serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. Ed’s commitment to economic development and his ability to see potential where others saw decay – whether in old barns or struggling businesses – set him apart as a true visionary.

The impact of Ed’s work and mentorship will continue to ripple through our community for years to come. His sudden departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his spirit of entrepreneurship and community support will live on through the countless lives he touched and the businesses he helped nurture.

Ed Holand will be deeply missed, but his legacy as an outstanding entrepreneur, mentor, and supporter of economic development will continue to inspire and guide our community forward. May his memory serve as a beacon for future generations of entrepreneurs and community leaders.
