The Chippewa Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) understands that for any community to grow they need modern infrastructure- great roads, rail, and fiber. Recently CEDC worked with the Chippewa County Highway Department to organize and celebrate the completion of a modern bridge across the Chippewa River. Governor Tony Evers presided over the momentous event held on July 25th, 2023. The new Cobban Bridge opened just 6 years after the closure of its predecessor three months ahead of schedule. At a cost of 4.6 million dollars, it was designed to cater to the diverse transportation needs of rural Chippewa County.

Built in 1908, the former two-span Pennsylvania through-truss bridge was the oldest of its kind in Wisconsin. The bridge closed in August 2017 after a routine bridge inspection noted some deficiencies and the bridge could no longer safely support vehicles. Chippewa County received funding for final design and construction in 2018. The project began in August 2022 with the demolition of the former bridge. Almost a year later, officials opened the new Cobban Bridge.

From firetrucks, ambulances, school buses, and agricultural equipment the new Cobban Bridge is stronger and wider. With this returning access, the community can now enjoy reduced travel distances across the river and have a reliable backup option in case of emergencies, closures, or maintenance on other Chippewa River crossings.

Over one hundred and fifty attendees witnessed and participated in the re-opening event. After the ribbon cutting the Governor accompanied by Senator Jesse James and Representative Rob Summerfield, led a parade of citizens in classic automobiles across the bridge.

While the decision to dismantle the previous bridge was not made lightly, efforts were made to commemorate its significance. Several sections of the original Cobban Bridge have been preserved to create historical markers and plaques for the area. This ensures that the legacy of the iconic structure will be cherished and admired by future generations.

The cutting of the Cobban Bridge ribbon symbolizes Chippewa County’s, Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation commitment to rural infrastructure modernization and economic development.
